  78. 1.1 About File Manager Guard

  80. File Manager Guard (or, for short, FM Guard) is a powerful utility
  81. for Microsoft(R) Windows(tm) 3.1, 3.11, and Windows for Workgroups
  82. (tm) 3.11, that allows one to selectively disable features and
  83. capabilities of File Manager and some other Windows components.
  84.  
  85. You will find FM Guard indispensable if you share you computer
  86. with someone else and you don't want the other one to mess your
  87. system up (even if s/he is someone very special!). Or, if you
  88. allow your kids to play games on your system from time to time,
  89. and want to be sure that everything will be OK when they finish
  90. them. Or if you are a network administrator and your users give you
  91. a headache messing the files up all the time. Or ...
  92.  
  93. After installing FM Guard, you will be able to prevent user(s)
  94. from performing any or all commands of File Manager, from running
  95. undesirable programs, browsing hidden files, changing file
  96. attributes, etc. FM Guard allows you to select which drives should
  97. NOT be accessible via File Manager and Common Dialogs ('Open',
  98. 'Save As', etc.). It even provides you with the possibility to
  99. keep the size and location of the File Manager window in the same
  100. place on the screen! And if you need to restore the capabilities
  101. of File Manager for your use, just enter a password and they are
  102. back.

  135. 1.3.1. What is the difference between registered and unregistered
  136.        versions of FM Guard?
  137. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  139. Unregistered copies of our products are 100% fully functional. We
  140. make them this way so that you can have a real look at them, and
  141. then decide whether they fit your needs or not.

  143. The only difference is that the password required to disable FM
  144. Guard is fixed in the unregistered version (and it's displayed in the
  145. dialog box that prompts for it, so that you can completely evaluate
  146. the power of FM Guard, but anyone can easily disable it). Also,
  147. the NoGuardMenu command has no effect in the unregistered version.
  148.  
  149. When you order a license for continued use of FM Guard, you get a
  150. Registration Code, allowing you to use the NoGuardMenu command, set
  151. up your own password and turn the 'unregistered' password off.

  181. 1.3.3. How to order a license for use of FM Guard

  184. You may order a license for continued use of FM Guard with a credit
  185. card (Visa, MC, Amex, or Discover), personal check, money order, or
  186. cash.  You may also register via CompuServe (GO SWREG, ID# 3858).

  188. Just open file ORDER.TXT with Notepad, fill in the information
  189. requested, print it out and send it to the authorized dealer.
  190.  
  191. If you would like to use FM Guard on a number of computers (stand
  192. alone or connected to a network), you must purchase a site license
  193. for that number of computers. Please refer to file ORDER.TXT for
  194. complete pricing and discount information.

  196. 1.3.4. May I make a copy of the program?

  198. Sure!  As long as the FM Guard package is complete and unmodified in
  199. any way, and you don't sell it, you may make copies of the software
  200. and give them to others, upload them to your favorite BBSes or FTP
  201. sites, etc.  Please read file VENDINFO.DIZ for a complete list of
  202. our distribution requirements.

  205. 1.4. Information for Windows 95 users

  208. If you are using FM Guard with Windows 95, be aware that FM Guard
  209. restricts only the 'old' File Manager, which is still available in
  210. Windows 95 as file Winfile.exe.  Also, the 'old style' common
  211. dialogs (used with 16-bit applications) are restricted.
  212.  
  213. This version of FM Guard DOES NOT provide restrictions for Explorer
  214. or 'new' common dialogs.

  222. Unlike most other Windows applications, FM Guard is not a
  223. stand-alone program; there is no special executable file you would
  224. run to start FM Guard.  To use FM Guard, all you need is to properly
  225. install it, and it will run automatically every time you run the
  226. File Manager.
  227.  
  228. FM Guard comes with convenient SETUP utility.  Use SETUP when you
  229. want to temporarily activate/deactivate the software or install it
  230. onto your hard disk or network drive for permament use.
  231.  
  232. Installing over an older version
  233. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  234.  
  235. If you are installing FM Guard on a computer which already has an
  236. older version of the program installed, you may use the SETUP
  237. program, however be sure not to overwrite your customized
  238. configuration file FMGUARD.SYS in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  239. SETUP prompts you before it replaces any of the old files.  After
  240. the copying of the new files is completed, you may manually add new
  241. restricting commands (they are listed in the end of the 'fresh'
  242. FMGUARD.SYS file) to your customized FMGUARD.SYS file.
  243.  
  244. Installing on a hard disk or network drive
  245. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  246. If you have already copied all the files from the FM Guard package
  247. onto your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the files
  248. from an archive), copy FMGUARD.SYS into the WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  249. directory, run SETUP.EXE and choose 'Activate' option.
  250.  
  251. If you don't have FM Guard files on the hard disk, choose the
  252. 'Install' option instead. Then enter the DOS path to the directory
  253. where you want FM Guard to be installed. In this case, SETUP.EXE
  254. will copy all files to the new location and then activate them. In
  255. addition, you will be prompted to create a separate program group
  256. for FM Guard. It's not essential to have such a group, but it may
  257. be convenient.
  258.  
  259. Alternatively, you may install FM Guard manually:
  260.  
  261. 1. Create a directory on a hard disk or network drive for FM
  262.    Guard, say C:\FMGUARD, and copy all the files from the FM Guard
  263.    installation disk into that directory. If you have obtained FM
  264.    Guard compressed in an archive, extract all the files into the
  265.    FMGUARD directory (or other directory of your choice).
  266.  
  267. 2. Close File Manager.
  268.  
  269. 3. Copy the FMGUARD.SYS file into the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory on
  270.    your hard disk (be sure not to overwrite the newer version of
  271.    this file if you already have one!). The directory may have
  272.    another name in your system, but you can identify it by the
  273.    presence of the files USER.EXE and GDI.EXE (Windows system
  274.    files) in it.
  275.  
  276. 4. Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other
  277.    text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS directory on
  278.    your hard disk (or other directory you specified when
  279.    installing Windows). Please note: the file you need is
  280.    WINFILE.INI, not WIN.INI.
  281.  
  282.    Find the section [AddOns] in this file and add the following
  283.    line to it:
  284.  
  285.         FM Guard=C:\FMGUARD\FMGUARD.DLL
  286.  
  287.    (or specify the directory in which you copied FM Guard files,
  288.    if other than C:\FMGUARD).
  289.  
  290.    The resulting portion of WINFILE.INI should look like
  291.    this:
  292.  
  293.         ...

  303.    If there is no [AddOns] section in you WINFILE.INI file, you may
  304.    create one, adding the lines shown above to the end of the
  305.    WINFILE.INI file.
  306.  
  307.    Save the WINFILE.INI file.
  308.  
  309. 5. Run File Manager.
  310.  
  311. You should find a new menu item, "Guard", among other items of the
  312. File Manager's main menu.  If you cannot see the "Guard" item in the
  313. main menu of File Manager, an error has occurred.  Please verify
  314. that you have performed all the steps above, and, in particular,
  315. specified the correct path in the [AddOns] section of the
  316. WINFILE.INI file.  Also, make sure that file FMGUARD.SYS has been
  317. copied in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, and that other files have
  318. not been corrupted when copying them into the FMGUARD directory.
  319.  
  320. Uninstalling FM Guard:
  321. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  322. To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM Guard, choose
  323. 'Guard -Disable' from main menu of File Manager, then run
  324. SETUP.EXE and choose 'Deactivate'. If you decide to start using FM
  325. Guard later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose 'Activate'.
  326.  
  327. Alternatively, you may uninstall FM Guard manually:
  328.  
  329. 1. Choose 'Guard' command from main menu of File Manager and then
  330.    choose 'Disable' from popup menu. When prompted for the
  331.    password, type it in the dialog box. If you have not registered
  332.    FM Guard yet, use the word 'FMGuard' as the password.
  333.    Otherwise, use the password assigned with the PASSWORD.EXE utility
  334.    (see below).
  335.  
  336. 2. Close File Manger.
  337.  
  338. 3. Remove the line 'FM Guard=...' from the [AddOns] section of
  339.    WINFILE.INI (using Notepad, for example). You may also wish to
  340.    comment this line out instead, by placing a semicolon ';' as
  341.    the very first character of the line
  342.  
  343. After that you can restart File Manager: FM Guard will not be
  344. loaded. If you decide later to start using FM Guard again, restore
  345. the string 'FM Guard=...', specifying the complete DOS path to
  346. FMGUARD.DLL, in the [AddOns] section of WINFILE.INI.
  347.  
  348. The following steps should be completed only if you wish to
  349. remove the FM Guard from your system permanently:
  350.  
  351. 4. Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk where
  352.    you installed FM Guard;
  353.  
  354. 5. Delete file FMGUARD.SYS from the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory;
